P&G Canada has a rich history of achieving milestones, growth and success, thanks to its investment in its people. Since we began operations in Canada, we have been committed to continuing that investment while giving back to the communities where we do business.
On July 15, 1915, P&G begins operations in Canada when manufacturing starts in a new Hamilton, Ontario plant producing glycerine. Despite the rising unemployment rate during the Great Depression, not one of the plant’s 200 employees is laid off. Instead, P&G Canada sees an opportunity to introduce a five-day work week, becoming the first Canadian company to do so.
In 1948, P&G Canada introduces Tide, the first heavy-duty synthetic detergent. Hailed as a “washday miracle,” P&G Canada nearly triples sales between 1945 and 1950.
Canada’s birth rate balloons in the ’50s and ’60s. P&G prepares for consumption growth and expands their footprint in Canada.
The 1970s and ’80s mark a time of massive growth for P&G Canada. This growth is due to big brand launches in Canada, like Pampers in 1972 and Always in 1984.
The rapidly growing business requires huge capital investments. A new plant opens in Brockville to produce Tide and Bounce, and another in Belleville to produce Pampers and later Always.
By the end of the 2000s, P&G grows existing brands and launches Bounty, Charmin, Swiffer and Febreze. Old Spice was acquired and a merger with Gillette occurs by 2005.
The 2000s also sees P&G Canada introduce same-sex benefits, institute its first employee survey and donate more than $1 million to the United Way, becoming the first packaged goods company in Canada to achieve this level of giving.
In 2014, the Toronto head office gets converted to an innovative open-concept office that allows employees to choose from a variety of work settings based on their current task, incorporating new technologies and creating an environment for P&G Canada’s future.
