Full time Environmental Services Supervisor

Monday to Friday

The Environmental Services Supervisor will provide leadership and supervision of all activities within the scope of the ES Department, including but not limited to: Environmental Cleaning, Linen Services, Waste Management, Patient Transportation and Pest Control. The Supervisor will support frontline ES staff and clinical areas in day to day operations related to the delivery of our service in a cost effective manner while adhering to appropriate legislation and union contracts


• Community College Diploma in a related field
• Environmental Services Management Certificate or 3-5 years recent Environmental Services supervisory experience, preferably in a hospital environment
• Effective knowledge of computer skills and programs (Excel, Word, Outlook)
• Demonstrated teaching and coaching skills
• Demonstrated knowledge of cleaning and infection control best practices (patient care and non-clinical areas), portering and linen services preferred
• Working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
• Demonstrated understanding of client-centered service
• Working knowledge of the systems and equipment used to provide services within the ES Department
• Effective presentation and writing skills Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, communication and team-building skills
• Demonstrated ability to supervise numerous and diverse activities, organizing and prioritizing appropriately to meet demands and expectations
• Demonstrated ability to analyze, problem-solve, make recommendations for change, implement and evaluate
• Evidence of commitment to continuous education
• Membership with the OHHA is preferred

The Environmental Services Supervisor will utilize strong organizational, leadership and communication skills, technical knowledge of Housekeeping and the related services to oversee the Environmental Services Department and its daily operations. The successful candidate will also be required to oversee and assist Portering, Linen and Laundry and Materials Management as required.

What you will achieve with us:
Ownership of assigned areas on shift which can include duties but are not limited to:
• Development and implementation of staff morale building programs
• Checking in staff
• Communicating with the front line teams through huddles and one on one conversations
• Leading General Staff Meetings
• Scheduling responsibilities
• Calling in and replacing staff as required
• Monitoring and following up with absenteeism
• Staff development and training
• Collaboratively updating and implementing training programs
• Rounding and quality audits
• Developing and implementing of department environmentally friendly initiatives
• Reporting and investigation of staff incidents
• Performance management up to and including written warnings
• Conflict Management
• Team development and performance appraisals
• Handling and responding Emergency Situations as they arise according to Hospital Policies
• Project schedule development and implementation
• Maintaining waste collection and soiled linen collection systems
• Answering calls and requests for work from internal and external clients
• Payroll investigations
• Developing, participating and implementing Return To Work and accommodation meetings and plans
• Ensuring adequate supplies
• Ensuring equipment in proper working ordering
• Providing documentation of issues
• Accountable for training and development of staff
• Conducting and accountable for performance appraisals and development of staff
• Assisting in contract oversight and liaising with contractors
• Working with Ministry officials when required
• Participating in committees when assigned/required
• Other duties as assigned

Work Schedule:
The successful incumbent will be required to work rotating weekends and holidays as required, with availability of days for coverage as needed. The current shifts are currently 0800-1600 and 1600-2400. Schedules may change based on departmental needs.

What you bring to MSH:
• Previous experience in a leadership or supervisory capacity is preferred
• Completion of the OHA Environmental Services Certificate is required
• Membership with the OHHA is preferred
• Excellent knowledge of CSA and PIDAC standards as they relate to Environmental Services in Healthcare
• Excellent knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations
o Excellent knowledge of WHMIS and healthcare regulations
• Previous scheduling experience in a unionized environment
• Excellent knowledge of Infection Control and related practices and procedures
• Knowledge of Environmental Protection Act and associated regulations
o Biohazardous and hazardous waste handling
• Knowledge of the Employment Standards Act and associated regulations
• Excellent Computer skills
o Microsoft programs and operating systems
o Knowledge of Meditech is preferred
• Familiarity with Collective Agreements
• Understanding of and the ability to troubleshoot Housekeeping equipment
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• The ability to problem solve and resolve conflicts
• The ability to motivate staff, build and maintain effective teams
• Familiarity with contracts and procurement processes
